pics part two
Our appartments and the beach/rocks
sights in the mountains:
beach pics
Irapetra and its market, boulevard etc
He probably didn't survive..his mom wasn't there. The Island of Crete is famous for 'the thousands of wild cats living on the streets.
Restaurant on the boulevard that day and our view on the small beach next to it:
hello friends:)
Its been a long time, first the conventions and after that we went to the island of Crete for our holidays. We had a great time, so much sun and I just loved the warmth! (which we still miss down here)
We stayed in two appartments, one for my parents and one for me and my brother. Normally we would have had one that would fit four people but were a bit late arranging things so this was the only option. Which wasn't a big deal really. The couple that owned the appartments are Dutch people and most of the people on the appartment side were. The beach was only a 100 meters away and the water was so clear that you could see the bottom even when you were about 4 or 5 meters deep! We also bought glasses and a snorkel, so we got to see a lot of fish too. Matthijs even saw an octopus who probably was hiding for me, I never got to see it.
Matthijs has been fishing a lot too, but never caught something spectacular. he probably didn't have the right equipment and hooks, or not enough patience. Well I don't know..I don't have that much experience when it comes about fishing;)
The appartmentsite was near Ferma a small town. The bigger city nearby was called Irapetra and we found the congregation over there. We had written Bethel in Emmen (the Netherlands) before we went and they gave us the address. But for some reason, even though we had driven by like a hundred times, we never found the kingdomhall. But for the last time, when I saw a brother comming out of a building, I recognized him as a brother since he had a what does the bible really teach and a bible in his hands. So I knocked on the window and my dad made quick stop. I don't know what that brother thought when he saw this tiny blue car stopping in front of him, but he got it once we told him we were his brothers and sisters.
There were two of them and one spoke german. We attended the meeting that following Saturdaynight and were invited by the brother who spoke german. He had lived in Germany for over 36 years and when he retired he came back to the island of crete. But unfortunately his wife died a yearafter they moved back, so he felt pretty lonely. I was having a hard time talking German, still have too much English in my head..;)
When we came home I couldn't sleep so I decided to go to the beach and watch the stars for a bit. I laid down on a beachbed of the hotel that was on the little boulevard and after a while almost fell asleep. It was already 1.30 in the morning and all the lights were dimmed, I was the only person on the beach. So I thought it would be better to go back. When I stood up and started walking to the path that led to the apprtmentsite two streetdogs started barking and running towards me. I know I shouldn't run so I continued walking in the same pace I did before
but first thing I thought: where can I get medication for tetanus when one of them bites me? But dogs never enter strange district so once I was near the appartment site they stopped following me and barking at me and went back. pfffff!
That Sunday when we came to the breakfast (we had breakfast each morning at nine with all the other guests) everyone was curious what we had been doing since they had seen us walking in our dressy clothes the other night. They asked us whether we had had a nice party or concert. So when my dad said: we went to a meeting of Jehovahs Witnesses, everyone stopped talking for a moment. They were all very curious but not everyone dared to ask questions. one family probably thought we were strange and didn't speak to us if not nessecary. But they just got used to the idea, especially when they saw we're perfectly normal people.
The next day we walked through a ravine with some of the people who satyed at the appartment site as well, since its better to go with a group. They were all walking in their special walkingshoes, and our neighbor, klaas, thought he was the groupleader since he had walked this ravine already. The stones were pretty slippy because during the winter there's fast streaming water. So after a few rocks I decided to take of my shoes, that walks and climbs much easier! Everybody probably thought it was weird, but I didn't care. The ravine was a real pretty sight and we had fun together. After the walk we went to a taverna which is a greek restaurant. We went with another family staying on the site from Amsterdam. All the other families had little children so they went back to the appartments. They were really nice people and we got to witness to them too:)
We also got to visit Agios Nikolaos (pronounced as Ayos nikola-os) my mom and dad wanted to see some of the counrty and matthijs and I wanted to stroll along the boulevard and drink something on the boulevard. So my mom and dad brought us to the city and we got our cocktails (matthijs without achohol of course) and watched all the people passing by.
Another spectacular thing to visit was Knossos. It's the most famous archeological site on the island of Crete. You see an old Minoean city, the orgininal inhabitans of the island. The man who discovered it has build up some parts to show you what it must have looked like. It's really interesting to see how those people lived, during the same time Abraham lived! They already had a sewerage system made out of clay pipes, and flushing toilets.
Unfortunately the museum in Heraclion was closed so we only got to visit the site but never got to see the valuable things they found.
There's also a story about knossos, a mythological one. The greek are famous for their stories about Zeus and all those gods and half gods.
According to the stories there lived a king in Knossos, called Minos. And one day one of the gods gave him a marvelous bull to offer it to the god. (the minoean people worshipped the bulls) But the king thought the bull was way to valuable and beautiful to offer so he didn't. The god was furious and made the queen fall in love with the bull. So after a while the queen gave life to a son who the head of bull and who was very aggressive.
The creature was locked up in the palace and used against enemies since it was so strong and aggressive. A hero from Athens came to kill the creature so that they could be free of the cruel king Minos. He fell in love with Minos's daughter Ariadne who gave him a sword and a thread. I don't know how he did it but eventually he killed the bull and fled with ariadne to the mainland, and the greek were free from the cruel Minos. Because Ariadne gave the hero a threat of wool, sewing and knotting magazines are named Ariadne.
We're glad we didn't decide to go to Athens after our stay on the island. There a national wide warning because of all the fires. While we were on the island there was this real hot wind, which is now causing an extra problems for the greek people. It makes the fires spread much faster and easier. they also haven't had rain for a really long time so everything's so dry that the fire just ruins everything. It has already claimed 60 lives and many people are missing. The Airport in Athens is not reachable because of the fires so if we had went there we still would have been stuck in Athens.
I will now upload some pictures to show you bits and pieces of what I have seen. I've made tons of pictures so I hope I can upload a special selection since the pictures all together are about 2 GB.
Love to you all,
merel
